Street
Street photography is the lifeblood of my photography. There is something deeply fulfilling in capturing the candid and unsuspecting moments which pepper our existence.
Moments
Often they pass by quietly: here in no great hurry, there in a flash. The street photographer must mirror this nature. There have been many times where I perch at a particular spot for awhile, waiting for the right subject to reveal itself. Conversely, there are times when I take to the field and actively hunt for the decisive moment.
The moments that surround us are diverse and fluid; street photography by nature reflects this. There are few artistic conventions within this genre, and that is perhaps why it is so popular. However, there is one common element that is present in all street photography: people. At first this may appear to be a strict limitation, but this inclusion needn’t always be explicit. The suggestion of human activity is enough: a single shoe occupying a park bench whilst blurry, faceless figures whizz by; an overgrown and aging alleyway dotted with cars and blanketed overhead with power lines.
Street is ultimately a genre focused on the human experience; how that experience is captured is up to the photographer.
Freedom
Art
I believe that street is the purest expression of photography as an art. The power of a well sequenced photo project comprised of quality street work is nigh unmatched. There is something magical to it, something human. Something real.
This is what I strive for in my own work: to create art that is raw and real, art that reminds myself and others of our shared humanity.
More to come…
My journey with street photography has only just begun. I have already accumulated a large body of work in just 2 short years. The best part about this is that both my intrigue and my curiosity are not satisfied; they may never be.
This excites me.
The above photograph is from my project on Myrtle Beach, SC; it is still in its conceptual stage. The other photographs on this page come from my more matured project on Downtown Hendersonville, NC. Both projects are still in development.
